Dr. Mary Reflects on Her Second Maslach Burnout Inventory Assessment as She Nears the End of Coaching
Nov 02, 2026Shownotes For Podcast Episode 25: Dr. Mary Reflects on Her Second Maslach Burnout Inventory Assessment as She Nears the End of Coaching
In this episode of The Holistic Physician Coaching Podcast, Dr. Jessica Singh meets with Dr. Mary, a first-year family medicine resident and first-time mother, to debrief her second Maslach Burnout Inventory Toolkit assessment, as she nears the end of her coaching engagement.
The Maslach Burnout Inventory Toolkit combines the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Areas of Worklife Survey to measure burnout within the context of work life. According to Mind Garden, the Maslach Burnout Inventory is recognized as a leading measure of burnout and has been validated by more than 35 years of research. The Areas of Worklife Survey complements the Maslach Burnout Inventory by assessing workplace qualities that may influence work engagement or burnout.
When Dr. Mary completed her first assessment, she was on maternity leave and only a few months into her intern year. Now, as she approaches the end of her first year of residency and nears the final sessions of her coaching engagement, she reflects on how her experiences, perspectives, and sense of professional fulfillment have evolved. Despite the demands of residency and motherhood, she is pleasantly surprised to recognize that she may be experiencing less burnout than before.
Together, Dr. Singh and Dr. Mary compare her results across the three dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Dr. Mary reflects on an increased sense of personal accomplishment as she grows more confident in her clinical abilities, connects more meaningfully with patients, and recognizes the difference she is making in their lives.
At the same time, Dr. Mary explores an increase in depersonalization and what this means to her. She reflects on how exhaustion, demanding clinical schedules, and the culture of medicine can influence the way physicians perceive and interact with patients and colleagues. She emphasizes the importance of self-awareness in recognizing these patterns and her desire to maintain empathy and humanity in her practice throughout her medical career.
The conversation then turns to the Areas of Worklife Survey, which examines six workplace dimensions: workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values. Dr. Mary reflects on changes in her perceptions of her work environment, particularly her growing sense of community and connection with fellow residents, attendings, nurses, and patients. She also recognizes the ways she has proactively contributed to strengthening relationships and fostering community within her residency program.
As the session concludes, Dr. Mary reflects on the value of reassessing burnout over time to deepen self-awareness, recognize areas for growth, and identify opportunities for meaningful change in herself and her work environment. The conversation highlights the importance of approaching burnout assessment as an opportunity for reflection rather than as a measure that defines an individual, and of remaining mindful of both personal experiences and workplace factors that shape physician well-being.
